Chapter 3
A Woman In The Rabbit Costume
1920s and 1930s are well known to be the golden age of horror films. The strong foundation was laid by Warner Bros and Universal Studious. They created the movies you’ve probably never watched, but 100% have heard about.
Even Dracula perhaps would not be a beloved character he is today, but a bookworm’s niche interest. Modern teenagers would not obsess over vampire love stories nearly as much. That could be a preferable variation though.
But the horror craze was not exclusive to America, despite how strong the association is today. Numerous European independent filmmakers added their own vision to the growing industry.
Soon, the war came and people did not request scary stories anymore. The genre would be dead for long twenty years.
European films grew in the context of surrealism and psychological approach. They were much more artistic than the american counterpart. Had much smaller budgets too.
One such film was released in France in 1937. Directed by Bruno Piaf. The movie is called “How Rabbits Scream at Night”. The author was barely invited for any interviews and never came into wide public discussion. His movie rolled around a few theatres and was successfully forgotten to be preserved only in local French archives.
To be remembered for any amount of years, you have to be special.
I've found the film to have a few different variations from people's descriptions. The version I found had some episodes portrayed differently. This makes me think that it had a few different cuts altogether. I cannot fundamentally prove this theory though.
A short recap:
Ms. Jaolie lives alone in her family manor while her husband is away in America on business all the time. She has a friend, Janett, who comes every weekend to knit and chat. Apart from that, there is nobody in the mansion but two servants. The grey rooms are always empty.
Ms. Jaolie seems to enjoy the company of her friend, but when everyone leaves, she is lonely and everything around her is meaningless.
did they have any built sets 13-03-2006 14:47
pretty sure Bruno got old big house rented in his hometown and filmed the whole thing there 13-03-2006 14:47
he was a bit of a jerk tbh 13-03-2006 14:48
what’s with the house now 13-03-2006 17:30
From the archive of the town, the whole street was airbombed by surrendering nazis. 13-03-2006 17:48
Ms. Jaolie is knitting with Janett when they run out of wool. The material is kept in a storage room down the hall.
Ms. Jaolie cautiously walks through the darkness to the phantasmagorically big dark pantry, now conquered by spiders. The webs tremble under the long-forgotten blow of the wind.
Ms. Jaolie has to apply force to get the box open, but there is no wool left inside. She is sure she bought a whole pack just three months ago. Then she notices footprints on the dusty floor. Much bigger and more crooked than hers.
The madame returns to Janett, rings the servant bell and takes a rough, commanding stance. Not long after, the man arrives, Denis. Ms. Jaolie immediately gets to mocking him. She keeps calling him a useless piece of a junk and an idiot. Her friend is visibly distraught by the scene. Janett stands up for the man and asks everyone to calm down.
‘No one listens to my complains here anyway, Janett’
guys, I found out more about the guy who played the servant. link he was willingly drafted in the 1944 and dies on the last steps to germany. 07-03-2006 16:56
does look like him. sucks, at least he seems a cool dude 07-03-2006 17:32
Not like the coward director. Came back to France in 1945 and lived happily. Fuck him. 08-03-2006 10:21
Ms. Jaolie notices again and again that her things are misplaced, only to be later found somewhere else, in a completely different part of the manor. She is aggressive and cruel towards Denis and Sophia. Ms. Jaoile thinks that they are making a fool out of her.
The servants are fed up with her hate, but don’t move on from the job.
jaoly when her plunger is misplaced:

This consuming torture comes to an end one night. Madame hears footsteps somewhere deep in the halls of the building. Shurk, shurk, shurk. Ms. Jaolie grabs a candle and wanders out of her room.
The hallway is filmed to be visibly endless. She walks down it for almost three minutes. The doors are repeating. The further it is, the darkness is stronger, taking in the woman.
And yet, there is nobody to blame the sound on. Ms. Jaolie sighs and turns around when a loud sound strikes from the entrance. Something giant fell down there, broken apart into small metal pieces.
low budget? low budget my a** when they destroyed a whole clock 27-02-2006 15:16
No? To my knowledge they simply got a broken one from a local pallace and took it apart. They returned it full after the filming was done. 27-02-2006 15:42
got you 27-02-2006 15:57
you made the claw sad :( 27-02-2006 16:10
dude, look at the lightning in some scenes. that’s when you cannot buy enough equipment 05-03-2006 10:10
Ms. Jaolie walks down the stairs and cannot make herself look away from the giant mechanism on the floor. Once a symbol of this place, built by her grand grandfather. Now it’s nothing. She confesses to herself - they will not repair this thing. Almost three meters high, with lots of patterns and built-in miniatures. It’s lost forever.
But a light takes her out of sorrowful thoughts. The moon rose and looks at the woman through the wide window above the front door. The moon seems cartoonishly big and bright.
When the camera switches back to Jaolie, she is no longer alone. In the darkness of the hallway there is man waiting for her to notice him. He has a full black suit apart from a white vivid rabbit mask. The black-and-white recording makes the rest of his body disappear in the darkness.
where did they take that spooky mask from <0.0> 07-03-2006 12:30
it looks like papier-mache with artificial fur all over it. tbh looks impressive 07-03-2006 12:32
is the fur really rabbit? 07-03-2006 12:32
who knows these french lmao 07-03-2006 12:33
what got me really is that she doesn’t even scream when she sees him. the damn scared puppy eyes 07-03-2006 12:37

hey claw12 maybe we ll add this to his abilities on the main? 07-03-2006 12:42
I will look into that, guys! 07-03-2006 12:44
The man emerges from the blackness, towering over the lady. He touches her arms and weaves her body into a dance. They dance together in a large empty hall. You can notice as Ms. Jaolie somehow gains confidence from this. Her movements, first uncertain and forced, soon add to the rhythm; lock in to the pure emotion.
who played the bunny? 13-03-2006 20:34
have you read the credits, duuuude? It was just a random French local actor the director liked. If you know any info on him, you should tell us. 13-03-2006 20:38
what a friendly place here huh 13-03-2006 20:39
Then, at the last moment, the rabbit pulls her closer and bites into the woman’s shoulder with his long front teeth. The scene cuts to black.
Two days later, Janett optimistically comes to the mansion as per usual. She immediately sees the broken clock, but it’s not the worst offender. The whole house is in horrendous disarray. Everything is upside-down; dust everywhere.
Weirdly, Ms. Jaolie seems to be wearing a black masquerade mask of a bunny all the time. This one is from metal or plastic, painted over.
‘I fired all of them. They were lazy.’
As soon as Janett sees the hostess, she starts thinking about any ways to get out of this manor. When they sit down together for knitting, Janett asks for the bathroom. Ms. Jaolie points to the hallway without taking her eyes off the needles.
The guest, however, doesn’t go to the toilets, but to the right, to the exit, to the darkness that fills the whole path, to the escape so highly awaited. The same way Jaolie went recently. The poor woman grabs the wall to not fall or stumble upon something. Soon, the whole screen is black too. You can hear only her footsteps. They stop.
‘Who are you?’
In another two days, Mr. Jaolie finally comes back for one week. He walks into the ruins of what used to be his house. All dirty and vile. His wife is already waiting for him at the entrance. The man is unnerved, but approaches madame for a kiss.
Ms. Jaolie tells her husband that she asked the servants to leave for the rest of the day. The dining hall is just for the two of them. Mr. Jaolie smiles and follows his wife to the door on the left. A long table is sparkling with candles. Lots of huge dishes outshine the white patterned cloth.
Mr. Jaolie raises his eyebrows, absolutely stunned by his wife’s hospitality. He asks the woman, what are all of these plates that smell so good? She grins back and asks for him to sit.
the gore looked good, don’t you think? 29-02-2006 21:34
maybe ig. the giant apple in the mouth made me cackle more than anything 29-02-2006 21:36
The hostess takes the biggest dish on the table and pushes it to her husband’s side. Little does he know, Denise’s, Janett’s, and Sophia’s heads are on the platter. The husband screams and backs away. He backs away into the open arms of a tall man in a rabbit costume who immediately bites the gentleman in the head. Blood drips down, covering the victim’s eyes.
Ms. Jaolie strikes a knife into the man’s chest. He slowly kneels and collapses. Ms. Jaolie and the Rabbit man kiss with passion.
The end.
why do you think they chose a rabbit as a maniac? 03-03-2006 22:50
Innocence, I suppose. Josepp Bren thought a rabbit would be the last animal you suspect in murder. 03-03-2006 22:51
or he thought they are hot 03-03-2006 23:40
Or, well, he thought they are hot. 03-03-2006 23:42
why did he never talk to people? 03-03-2006 23:44
I would not call that never talked. His movie was a failure at the time, in a dying industry he thought he was about to conquer. It was just sad. He already had deep connection in the US and moved to the states when the movie flopped. 03-03-2006 23:45
Thx, good explanation 03-03-2006 23:46
I think a lot about this movie since I watched it. All the scenes are so slow and self-contained. It’s honestly amazing how big they made the mansion to look for the camera. The grey walls with lots of empty spaces, once covered by the paintings.
The plot is boring, I won’t argue with that, but there is something I am failing to describe. I am bad at reviewing art. Yet, many times this movie sparked interest in people. The amazing thing is it’s difficult to find a copy nowadays. That’s a degree to which the film is forgotten.
You have to be a nerd or really in love with classic movies. In 2012, the film got the only theatre adaptation ever which was arranged by the Sao Paulo University. Groups of students could decide themselves which scenario to put into action.
Choosing a movie scenario is not a novelty, but requires much more work to rewrite the whole thing for the stage. Moreover, you had to choose something old because new movies would fall under copyright. And yet, the students chose this.
There is no video recording of the whole thing and overall, this is not what this story is notable for. What we know is that Ms. Jaolie was played by Julia Rosa. Some of you, internet freaks, may already understand where I’m going with this.
Julia was 5'4". Dark-skinned and brown eyes. She had long hair. Maybe the most notable feature of her appearance. It always looked naturally light and smooth.
Julia Rosa successfully finished the Bachelor of Dramatic Art and tried to find a job in the San Paulo itself. The fate was not friendly to her however. She was not able to find anything respectable in her field, occasionally playing minor roles in local theatres.
The young actress soon gave up on her craft. She left her little apartment she rented in a questionable district of the city and moved to Rio de Janeiro. From there, her life is covered by a faint barrier of detachment.
The same year, 2013, a new “celebrity” rises in local bordels. “Сoelho Preto”. And from all the records that the police have gathered, I can conclude that she tried to put to use the mask preserved from her time as a student.
A black mask was a complete copy of Ms. Jaolie’s one. Carefully painted with a spray can, shining in the local red district.
Being fully masked was a popular gimmick for a good while. This, her skill and acting artistry made her a full-blown beloved idol. She gained lots of clients that stayed by her side.
For 3 years, she was moving from one brothel to another, often working on call. She was able to gain a lot of money, allowing her to stay at the best apartments of the city. As her close clients and colleagues claimed, she had very little competition in the trade. Though, 3 years have, of course, cooled her hot start.
If you had to imagine a normal day of hers, it would be waking up, exercises, voice practice (an old habit that was still present for some reason) and the rest of the day was work. She had 2 premium cars at her disposal that stood mostly unused. Clients usually had their own. She didn’t come back home until late night. Sometimes she didn’t come at all.
She began drinking a lot even during work. Her favourite was dry white wine, preferably French (local could compete), but now she indulged in any opportunity to get wasted she was given. That meant, she was also given a radically different treatment afterwards. Her body was even more abused than before.
Some spark disappeared. She was hopelessly stuck to the people that adored her body. All of her clients have been omitted from the official documents. Businessmen, investors and politicians. Only one of them is easy to identify because his death is recorded on camera as well as tons of news about his demise at the time.
The man was a leader of a renowned farming company. A first new client for Ms. Rosa in many months. She would not accept this offer before. The guy was 74. He got a room for them in the Pavuna district. A shack-looking house hid neatly arranged halls filled with rooms for wealthy individuals. The man set up a camera and layed on his bed naked. His wrinkles dripping on the red velvet cover.
A minute later, Ms. Rosa strolled into the room. She didn’t even look at the man, but proceeded to the bedside table in the opposite corner. That’s where it was common to put the preferred clothes and the contraceptives.
- Oh, Julia, not even going to say hi?
She smiled at the man.
- I thought, I would put a costume on first.
- Good idea. If you let me watch of course.
Ms. Rosa proceeds to take off all of her clothes and puts on dark blue thigh-high stockings. When she is done, she comes to the bed and smiles again. She already has the black mask in her hands. The mask is exactly as it was described by people. A metal plate painted black. It was renovated many times over the last few years, but small bumps still made it obvious how old it really is for such an accessory.
- Hi, darling!
- Oh, yeah.
- Did Celina tell you all of the rules for our play?
- Of course, come here baby. Let me take some stress off for both of us.
Ms. Rosa notices the camera and frowns.
- What? Never done that before?
- Have done. Many times. No problem.
- Good girl.
Julia still looks awkward.
- Come on, warm up. I love older women like you. Even some saggy skin is fine. Come show what's under those panties. I have something that can fix you.
Ms. Rosa climbs on the bedsheet, closer to the man. He immediately grabs her face and slaps her cheek.
- Who has been a bad mommy? Who will be a good girl?
- Me.
- Now smile, honey. Smile for me wide, then get your mouth wide open.
Julia opens her mouth, but these are not human teeth. 4 sharp yellow rectangles are instead there, munching on the air.
- What the fuck
- What? – mumbles Julia.
She tries to close her mouth, but the teeth don’t feet. She accidentally cuts her own lip. The blood splashes down.
- What is wrong?
Julia tries to scream, but her mouth bends in a wrong way. The client tries to push the woman, but she is too heavy for him.
Both of them finally start screaming. The young voice is raspy but overpowers. Now, Julia makes an effort to push herself away from the old body, but when she places a hand on its thin ribs, they give away. Her limb becomes longer and thicker compared to before.
The old man begins wheezing. His lungs are clearly damaged.
Julia’s old skin falls on the bed. The blood is barely noticeable on the redness of the velvet.
You can see the fear in Julia’s eyes behind the mask. Deep unspoken horror as she tries to move her hand. It’s just purple fur all over. The paw is twitching rapidly, plunging deeper into the old man’s tissues.
Her second hand starts growing in size too. It pushes the camera onto the floor, successfully breaking it. This video became popular on Portuguese gore porn websites and some English pages too where it got fan subtitles.
It was seen as a cgi fan masterpiece rather than a real recording which I can almost surely say it is. Not like anyone has analyzed it online before.
8 minutes pass before the woman got out of the room. A security camera in the hallway captured her from a distance. Julia was almost 9 feet tall, scrubbing the ceiling with her ears. They were purple, rabbit-like, sticking out from behind the much smaller mask. Her feet and arms were twice as long as before. She walked in a crooked way, as if not adjusted for a standing way of locomotion. The only thing that looked human was her face. And then, everything above the mouth grew into the metal mask.
The hips and the belly were inflated to the point of looking like balloons.
Her fat red lips kept opening and closing. She was repeating something again and again. CCTV had no audio, but in the stories people told later this detail was preserved. "Human. Human. Human. Human. Human."
Julia needed to lurch using all of her muscles to get to the fire exit. She fell from the second floor onto a stone sidewalk.
The city screamed itself. Lone hallways, alleys, pipes and roofs. Screamed into the black sky looking for answers that the uninvested universe had none.
Then a lone drop into the water scattered. A man, seeking an escape from his wife that evening, stood near the shore to witness the play.
There went the woman. Right into the water as the cold stream slowly helped her to move on, entangled her in trash, torn nets and lost hooks. A lone bare body of the woman in the rabbit costume.

Police spent three days tring to find Julia's body in the city area. It was not a quick river. She could not just disappear. Mysteriously, they found only certain parts of her: a few nails, hair, breast implants, and a ring with engraving on the inside "class of 2013".

I am very cautious about uploading this. What do you guys think?
I tried to find as much info as I could, but there is just the video and a few paragraphs about Julia here and there. The movie was a completely different investigation I added to the folder where I keep all the info about rabbits. It was very late when I made this connection.
I tried to find anything about cults in Rio. Satanists, pagans, anything. I might be childish, but what else could this be? There is nothing even remotely connected. People don’t just do what she did. People don’t just change.
I will try to find more info about all of this. I want to find a cause. I don’t see a cause for all of this in Cransbrook. The bridge story is just nonsense. And Julia’s life was not something important or deeper. I mean objectively.
I would like to see more about her clients. Maybe that’s where the cause is. But I bet, those names were removed from everywhere by now.
I will come back as soon as I find something viable. I am sure this all is connected. Stay tuned!
